The Heart Sound Challenge is designed to develop the confidence of the student or health care professional in their ability to use the stethoscope to examine patients’ hearts. This is accomplished by providing the learner with an engaging, game-like environment to develop their ability to hear and identify eight basic heart cadences.

The eight cadences taught in this app are:

· Normal S1 S2 at the apex
· Split S1 at the tricuspid area
· Split S2 at the pulmonic area
· Normal S1 S2 at the aortic area
· Systole (systolic murmur)
· Diastole (diastolic murmur)
· S3 Gallop
· S4 Gallop

Learners develop their mastery of the cadences by using the following modules:

The Primer - this is a brief multimedia tutorial on the eight basic cadences. Learn and listen to the sounds, murmurs, and timings that make up the cadences. See where to position the stethoscope to best hear the cadences.

The Heart Sound Challenge - use this game-like environment to develop your mastery of the cadences. Here you will be presented with the cadences and asked to identify them with a quick tap to the screen. Try for 24 in-a-row and try as often as you like. A quick and fun way to learn without getting bored.

Compare Mode - with this feature, you can quickly compare cadences (and their diagrams) with one another. This is a good way to quickly compare and distinguish the differences between cadences that sound similar.
